Provident Fund (PF) is an investment fund which is contributed to by employers, employees, and in some situations, by the state as well. A lump sum is provided to each employee on retirement out of this fund. A provident fund account is created of every individual. They are then allocated a Unique Account Number (UAN) by the Employee Provident Fund Organization (EPFO). This Unique Account Number allows you to access, check and withdraw money from the Provident Fund Account without any interference.

Following are the steps to get your UAN Number:
1] Get Relevant PF Details From Your Employer
EPFO allocates all the UAN’s of all employees to the employer. So, you can simply ask your employer for your UAN. If your employer denies then just note down your PF number. You can find that on your payslip. If the payslip doesn’t have the PF number, then ask your HR to provide it.
2] Check The UAN Status
If you know your unique account number, then you can easily check if that is been activated. If you don’t know it then check if you have been allotted one by EPFO. If you haven’t been allotted then generate it immediately. Use the following steps:
1] Go to UAN Website.
2] Fill in all the details for the EPF. After that, enter your PF number, it may look like MH/NK/264931/000/25883. ‘000’ denotes Ext and the last number 25883 denotes your PF number. If you do not have Ext number then you can leave it blank.
3] Click on the “Check Status” button. If EPFO has allotted you a UAN number then you will get a message saying that your UAN is activated. Otherwise, generate your UAN as it is not allotted to you yet.
A] Generate your UAN
You can easily generate your UAN even if you are a student about to get a job or unemployed. Just follow these simple steps.
- Go to EPFO website.
- Under ‘Our Services’ click on ‘For Citizens’ link.
- This will take you to a page that has a link to register for UAN. Click on this link.
- Fill in all the required details. Also, you need to upload a photograph and a scanned image of your signature.
Once you are done with filling all your details, you will get an authorization PIN number on your mobile number. Enter this PIN and your UAN will be generated online.
In case you have already been allotted a UAN, but you don’t know what it is and your employer isn’t providing you then do the following:
B] Finding out your UAN Number
If you have already been allotted a UAN, click on “Check Status” as given above, you’ll get a message saying “a UAN has been allotted for Member ID xxx” (this is your employer’s number). You will then be redirected to a verification page.
- Fill in all the necessary details.
- Then, you have to create a password.
- Then click on ‘Get PIN’.
- The PIN is sent to your mobile number. Enter it on the portal and click “Submit”.
You are then redirected to “Check Status” page again. This is where your UAN is printed. All the details are sent to you via SMS. You can save your UAN for future use.
3] Activation Of UAN Number
Everyone can generate a UAN online, but you can activate it only after you get your EPF number. If you have this PF number, then simply go to UAN Registration and enter you UAN, mobile number, and PF account details. After that,
- Authorization PIN number is sent to your mobile. Enter the PIN to activate your UAN.
- After activation, fill in all the details. You need to create your password afterward.
- Your UAN is your username for the portal, and the password is the one you just created.
4] Editing Your KYC Details
Once you’re UAN has been activated, you can edit your KYC details. KYC is an identification process of an individual. This is mandatory when financial accounts are being created. It is good practice to keep your KYC up-to-date whenever there are changes in your contact details, address etc. To edit your existing KYC details, go to the ‘Edit Your KYC’ link on the EPFO website. You have to upload your documents like Pan Card, Aadhar Card etc. Scan these documents and upload them.
